Well, trying to. I had planned to be there on 13 July when the three Cunard Queens were in port together (for the second time this summer). I’d booked a hotel and train tickets (for which I bought a Senior Railcard! – now I do feel old) but in the event I didn’t go. When we got off the Grand Event mini-cruise on Oriana on 7 July I was in the early stages of a major cold, and while I had largely recovered by the 13th I wasn’t fully recovered. The combination of that, a busy day on the following Sunday and a weather forecast that didn’t promise much made me decide to not go. I still think it was, on balance, the right decision but I was pretty disappointed all the same.

So I’m going to have another try on 1 September. No Cunarders this time but an interesting mix of five different ships: Celebrity Eclipse, Grand Princess, Oriana and Ventura from P&O, and Star Flyer, one of Star Clippers’ two ‘sail-assisted’ small scale (170 passengers) luxury ships. Then if I feel like getting up very early the following morning I might see Aurora, Oceana and Azura arriving.

Back to the ‘Three Queens’ day on 13 July: I am disappointed that I missed it, especially as there isn’t a similar event scheduled for next year. Never mind: in the mean time I can enjoy the pictures of the event (and others) on Gadger’s blog and also this very good video from Cunard themselves on YouTube.
