This evening we had a meal in the Orchid restaurant. It was very good, but perhaps not exceptional.

We had a pre-starter of chicken in a pastry coating with a sweet chilli sauce, then for starters we had curried pork and bean sprout spring roll (Val) and deep-fried lime and ginger chicken (me). For mains we had ginger chicken breast with wok-fried greens, jasmine rice and coconut curry sauce (Val) and wok-fried medallions of pork fillet with stir-fried vegetables and black bean sauce (me), and for dessert we shared a coconut and palm sugar custard tart with apple sorbet. We also had a sparkling wine to drink – Pelier Ice Cuvée Sparkling, from Ontario, and that was very good – medium sweet and with enough body to stand up to the Asian flavours. Of all the above the pre-starter and starter were excellent, and the dessert was very tasty, But the main courses, while tasty enough, seemed heavy and in both cases were a bit overwhelmed by the sauces. Not unpleasant, just not as good as the rest of the meal.

Tomorrow we’re at sea before Lisbon on Tuesday and Vigo on Wednesday. Tomorrow is also the third formal night – Black & White night.

It’s worth saying that the service was excellent.
