I’ve just learned that the restrictions regarding larger cruise ships in Venice that were due to come into force at the end of this year have been overturned on appeal. The grounds seem to be that the decision was arbitrary – there was no technical justification for it, and no alternative were available for larger ships. So the law has been suspended with immediate effect, pending a further review in June.
So there is still great uncertainty. But no reason yet for the lines to change their planned deployments in Venice for 2015 – the June review could go any-which way. P&O have announced today that Oceana will replace Ventura on its program of Mediterranean fly cruises (which call at Venice) in 2015 (Ventura is doing them this year), and Celebrity Cruises has scheduled Celebrity Constellation, a Millennium-class ship, to do cruises out of Venice in 2015, replacing the several Solstice-class ships that have been doing them for the last few years.
