Carnival Corporation has this afternoon announced that it has received approval from relevant US Government departments to add Cuba to its cruise destinations. The first cruises to visit Cuba will be on Adonia, as part of its 2016 program under the new brand ‘fathom’, to which the ship will be transferred in spring 2016. The first itineraries under the new brand will be to the Dominican Republic, but subsequently Cuba will alternate with it. These cruises will operate out of Port Miami.
Since 1960 there have been restrictions in US citizens travelling to Cuba, and strictly, those restrictions remain in place today, but the current US administration is attempting to get them lifted. There are some hiccups along the way – a continuation of the ban on trade with Cuba was added to a recent bill passed by the House of Representatives.
